'Anand does not deserve a position in FIDE'
Carlsen targets former Indian chess player
World number one Magnus Carlsen on Monday criticised senior officials of the world chess body FIDE, including vice-president Viswanathan Anand, for mishandling the dress code violation issue, saying they have not adapted to the times and India's great player is not ready for his role in FIDE.
Norway's Carlsen described the decision to disqualify him as old-fashioned and called the officials robots who are not capable of taking independent decisions. Carlsen told 'Tech Tech Tech App', I think the situation was handled badly by them (FIDE). I was about to leave here and was going to book a plane ticket when my father said that we should probably wait till morning to decide to talk to the FIDE president. We have a good relationship with Arkady Dvorkovich.
Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen was earlier fined $200 after he violated FIDE's dress code by wearing jeans. The Norwegian was disqualified by chief arbiter Alex Holovczak after he refused to change his attire before the ninth round. "We had a long discussion with Anand and others yesterday but it did not lead to any conclusion. We usually got the same answers like the arbitrator is a robot who cannot think for himself and cannot find a middle ground on the rules," Carlsen said. "I don't even know if I have broken any rule or not. I still haven't got a clear answer on this. They were saying that wearing jeans is generally not allowed. If it is generally said then it means that there must be exceptions. If I am not in that exception category even after dressing decently, then I don't know what will happen," said Anand, who is himself a five-time world champion. He told ChessBase India that Carlsen "refused to follow the rules, leaving him with very few options." So I'm not even sure I broke any rules. He took advantage of the opportunity by pushing a very narrow interpretation of a rule. There was obviously no room for discussion or anything with him. That means he is not up to the job even with all his good qualities, Carlsen said.
