Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari is known in Indian politics as a leader who is famous for his outspokenness and outspoken statements. He often does not publicize his work, but keeps working quietly. Whether it is about road construction or criticism of government policies, Gadkari expresses his views clearly, without any political pressure.
Clarity on road construction and toll system
During a program on June 27, 2024, Gadkari made a statement with great clarity about the poor roads on national highways. He said, "If the roads are not in good condition, toll should not be charged. Toll should be imposed only when the quality of the roads is excellent." This statement of Gadkari demonstrated his commitment that he focuses only on working in the interest of the public and not only on government profits.
GST on insurance premium. Demand for removal
On 28 July 2024, Gadkari wrote a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman demanding the removal of the 18% GST applicable on life and medical insurance premiums. He wrote, "A person who pays insurance premium for the protection of his family should not be taxed. It is like taxing the uncertainties of life." Gadkari's move was in favor of the middle class and low-income group people who are troubled by the heavy tax levied on insurance premiums.
Offer of Prime Minister's post rejected
On 14 September 2024, Gadkari revealed in a public statement that a senior opposition leader had offered him to become the Prime Minister, which he politely declined. He said, "I am a person who follows an ideology and belief. My party has given me everything I had never imagined." Gadkari also said that becoming the Prime Minister is not his goal, and he will not compromise with his principles.
Outspoken statement on politics
On 23 September 2024, at an event in Nagpur, Gadkari said, "There is no guarantee that the BJP will form the government at the Centre for the fourth time." This statement reflects his realistic approach towards politics. During this, he described politics as another name for nation building and social service, but at the same time also said that today's politics has become limited to the game of power only.
Targeting the lack of investment in Vidarbha
On 1 October 2024, Gadkari questioned the schemes of his own party's government and talked about the lack of investment in the Vidarbha region. He criticized the Maharashtra government's 'Ladki Behan Yojana', saying that the lack of funds for this scheme could affect investment in other areas. He advised investors not to depend on the government and described it as a 'poison girl', which drowns whoever it goes with. Gadkari's statement came at a time when the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra was vigorously promoting its schemes.
Opposition's reaction
The opposition also reacted sharply to Gadkari's outspoken statements. Opposition parties described his comments as a sign of serious crisis on the state's financial condition. Opposition leaders said that if senior leaders in the government are raising questions on the state's financial condition, then it is really a matter of concern.
Conclusion
Nitin Gadkari's forthright and outspoken attitude has given him a distinct place in Indian politics. He not only constantly strives to bring about improvements in his ministry, but whenever he finds something unfair, he expresses his opinion without hesitation. Whether it is the issue of quality of roads, tax on insurance premium or the offer of the post of Prime Minister, Gadkari has always given priority to principles. These statements of his not only show his courage, but also prove that he puts only national interest above everything else.
