New Delhi, August 25, 2016, marked a milestone in the history of India's financial system. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched on that day, has today completed a successful 10-year journey. In this decade, UPI has become more than just a digital tool, but the backbone of India's everyday life and economy. From payments of a few rupees at a tea stall to large business transactions, it has given a new dimension to the cashless revolution in the country.

On this historic milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the countrymen through the social media platform 'X' and expressed pride in the unprecedented expansion of UPI.

"A proud moment for every Indian": Prime Minister Narendra Modi
On the completion of 10 years of UPI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this step taken a decade ago has proved to be a game changer in India's digital journey. He emphasized that the scale at which UPI is being used across the length and breadth of the country is a matter of pride for every Indian.

13,000-fold jump: The numbers themselves speak for themselves.

Data released by the Ministry of Finance illustrates India's adoption of the technology over the past 10 years:

Financial Year 2016-17: In the initial year, total annual transactions were just 17.8 million.

Financial Year 2025-26: Within 10 years, this figure surpassed annual transactions of over 24,162 crore. This represents a historic increase of nearly 13,000 times in transaction volume.

Significant jump in terms of amount: While only ₹0.07 lakh crore worth of transactions were transacted through UPI in 2016-17, by 2025-26, this figure will have increased to a massive ₹314 lakh crore.

Record after record: New milestone set in July 2026
UPI's momentum continues unabated. In May 2026, monthly transactions surpassed 2,300 crore (2,320 crore) for the first time. In July 2026, 2,366 crore transactions were recorded, the highest single-month figure in UPI's history.

Strong network from 44 to 703 banks
Initially, it took time for the banking sector to embrace this digital transformation, but today the situation has completely changed. In 2016-17, only 44 banks were connected to the UPI platform, while by the financial year 2025-26, this network has expanded to 703 banks.

India's dominance on the global stage: UPI resonates worldwide
India's digital success is no longer limited to national borders. Today, UPI services are operational in 11 countries (UAE, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and Maldives).

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India's UPI alone will account for 49% of total real-time digital payment transactions worldwide by 2025. In 10 years, UPI has not only digitally empowered India but also demonstrated India's technological capabilities globally.
